Show Samples of Your Best Work

The creation of a portfolio is one of the best ways to highlight a freelancer’s skill and abilities.  Just shoot whatever events and subjects interest you to build up your portfolio.

The key step in submitting your work for pay is building a portfolio that shows samples of your best work.  You don’t have to have published photos to begin your portfolio.

You can learn from the pros by studying the portfolios of the top photographers at each of the major stock photography sites.  If you're not shooting on a regular basis, you're likely not going to be adding the essential bulk to your portfolio that you need to be.

Adjust your portfolio based on the gig you're trying to earn.  You will also need a good portfolio to show prospective clients so they will want to hire you.  Take all the photos you can of whatever you can to build your portfolio.

One way to sell your photos and get more work is to create a professional looking website that has portfolio and features like client access where you can assign private portfolios.  This is the only real indication of the kind of work you can do, and you may even want to put your specialty of photographer in the centerfold of the portfolio so the client knows what kind of shoots you enjoy the most.

Seasoned wedding photographers will show their "book," or portfolio of their best work while discussing their experience and style. You must have a strong portfolio, good communication skills, sales skills, perseverance, and good equipment.

Just remember, one of the most important issues you want to look at when considering freelance photography is your portfolio.  Your portfolio should be a reflection of the area of photography that you particularly want to specialize in.
